How can we help Haiti?

Haitians are reeling from the devastating earthquake that struck their country on Tuesday, January 12.  This magnitude 7.0 quake struck about 10 miles (15 kilometers) southwest of the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince causing mass destruction. The extent of the disaster remains unknown, but it is thought that well over one hundred thousand are dead and over a million people have been left homeless.  Reports of devastating shortages of food, surgical supplies, and other life-saving material continue.

Money is the fastest and most efficient way to send support.  We suggest you research organizations that offer relief directly to Haitians.  Let us know if you have recommendations for these donations.

The following relief organizations were recommended by journalist Kim Ives of Haiti Liberte (reporting from Haiti) and/or Haitian-American novelist Edwidge Danticat.  These are organizations already in place who have been working in Haiti before the earthquake, and will continue after the initial relief effort.
