Vote Today - Super Fat Tuesday
Written by Michael Minn
Tuesday, 29 January 2008

New York will join 23 other states in voting on Super Tuesday, February 5, 2008 to select 281 of the 4,393 delegates (6.3%) who will choose the party's presidential nominee at the Democratic National Convention in Denver in August. Six Democrats will be on the primary ballot — Hillary Rodham Clinton, Barack Obama, John Edwards, Dennis J. Kucinich, Bill Richardson and Joseph R. Biden Jr., althoughonly Clinton and Obama are still pursuing the nomination.

You can find your polling place online at New York City Board of Elections Polling Place Locator or by calling866-VOTE-NYC

When you vote, you will select a presidential candidate AND five delegates tothe convention. You will probably want to select a group of delegates that supportyour candidate, although if you like multiple candidates and are feelin non-committal, you could split your delegate votes...for example: two Clinton delegate and three Obama delegates.Only Clinton and Obama have full lists of potential delegates in all of New York's 29 congressional districts. Edwards has delegate slates in most of the city's districts, but none of the other withdrawn candidates have any delegates on the ballot.Chris Dodd and Mike Gravel have no presence of any kind on the city ballots.

Once the voting is complete, the process then becomes UNBELIEVABLYcomplicated. Voters actually directly choose only 151 of the 281 delegates and there is a viability test and proportional allocation scheme that adds additional fuzziness to the process. The New York delegation is topped off with 85 additional delegates selected at the Democratic State Convention in May, and 45 "Super Delegates" (including former President Bill Clinton and other local political leaders) who are "unpledged" to any specific candidate and can vote for anyone they please.

Those interested in the gory details of how New York's convention delegate sausageare made should see Sewell Chan's very detailed piece on the NY Times Blog HERE...
