Going Green in Queens '08

Going Green in Queens '08 is a free environmental, educational, and networking event for individuals and groups that are green, environmental, parks, volunteer and civic minded. The afternoon will include:

A tabling exhibition highlighting local and city wide volunteer, non- profit, and green organizations such as the City Parks Foundation, Citizens Committee for NYC, Solar One, Transportation Alternatives Queens Committee along with 2 dozen other organizations.

A Keynote Speaker featuring Queens Parks Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski, who is not only a Parks Commissioner but also a Queens native who has been blazing a blue trail for NYC.

And 12 workshops to choose following the different trail themes of Trees, Water, Environmental Sustainability and Resources for You including:

Trees

  • Street Tree Sleuthing - Discover the Secrets of NYC Street Trees. Presented by Laura Wooley , Central Forestry and Sam Bishop, Trees NY
  • Masters Level Pruning - More Than Just Dead Wood. Presented by Sam Bishop, Trees NY
  • One is the Loneliest Number. Presented by Cindy Van Houten & Jennie Nyulasi - Friends of Gantry Neighborhood Parks Learn how by gathering friends and neighborhood locals together how you can build community be a better friend to your neighborhood trees. Cindy and Jennie will reveal their formula for success.

Water

  • City of Water - A Short Film on NYC Waterways. Roland Lewis, Remy Monteko-Sherman and Jennifer Stark-Hernandez from Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance

Getting There

If Driving to the Hall of Science - Make sure you mention that you are there specifically for Going Green in Queens when you get to the parking lot. Everyone there for the event will get free parking for the day. Otherwise they will charge you $10 which the organizers do not have the power to refund. Likewise inside.

If taking the subway - from the 7 subway at 111St there will be a white Parks shuttle bus on the corner of 111St by Roosevelt Ave to bring participants to the event from 9:30-10:30am. You can also walk straight down 111 St for about 10-15 minutes until you see the Hall of Science on your left. Please let folks inside know that you are there for Going Green in Queens to avoid lines and fees.
