April 22, 2008
There are actually two semi-official "Earth Day" celebrations.
The first, around the March equinox (around March 20), was introduced by John McConnell at a UNESCO
Conference on the Environment in 1969 and has subsequently been observed by the United Nations.
The second, April 22nd, had its birth with the burgeoning envionmental movement in 1970
and was initially proposed by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson as a set of large pro-environment
demonstrations and "teach-ins."
(Wikipedia)
April 22 is probably the more celebrated of the two, although since it falls on a tuesday
this year (also the day of the Pennsylvania primary), the bulk of the celebrating will be done
the prior weekend. Among numerous activities nationwide will be a
festival in Central Park
that includes a large concert at the Rumsey Playfield.
On Wed, April 23 at 6:30pm, SCREENING LIBERALLY, EATING LIBERALLY and NYU's EARTH MATTERS will be
presenting Everything's Cool, an Earth Week film with guest speakers, snacks & comedy.
