(2) Want Reform in Albany?
Get on the Bus
Tomorrow, (Tues, Apr. 29) or Make a Phone Call
Reform Day is a yearly grassroots event in which good government groups
and concerned citizens from all over New York State go to Albany by bus
to talk to elected officials about reform in Albany. Tomorrow is the
2008 Reform Day, and there are still a few seats on the NYC buses.
The NYC bus will leave from 6th Avenue and Spring Street at 6am.
It
will make another pickup at 42nd Street and Park Avenue (Southeast
corner) at 6:30am. Bus are expected to return to NYC at about 7:30pm.
We understand that many people who want Albany reform cannot take a day
trip to Albany. So if you can't go, please call your Assemblymember
and your State Senator; see Section (3) below.
A message from DFNYC's Dan Jacoby:
Reform NY Day is tomorrow Tuesday, April 29.
We need more people
to sign up for the bus trip to Albany. This is your opportunity to
tell elected officials that we need reforms in four areas: Ethics
Reform, Rules Reform, Campaign Finance Reform, and Redistricting Reform.
Ethics Reform: We are pushing for an independent
oversight agency
for both the executive and legislative branches, strengthening the ban
on personal use of campaign contributions, and other restrictions.
Rules Reform: Four years ago, the Brennan
Center for Justice
released a report calling for significant rules reform. Since then,
very little action has been taken to open up the legislative process,
and "three men in a room" is still the method of operation. We
are
calling for rules changes that allow our legislators to be active
participants in the process.
Campaign Finance Reform: While some groups
in the current reform
coalition have not signed on to "Clean Money, Clean Elections," we are
calling for public financing of campaigns, significantly lowering
campaign contribution limits, limiting transfers from "soft money"
accounts, tightening reporting requirements, and strengthening
enforcement.
Redistricting Reform: We are calling for
an independent
districting commission, rather than allowing legislators to draw the
district lines.
TO SIGN UP:
Go to
http://www.commoncause.org/site/pp.asp?c=dkLNK1MQIwG&b=3960281.
You can also see details about bus schedules and departure
locations.
We still have plenty of room on the bus!

(3) Can't Go To Albany Tomorrow?
Make a Phone
Call - List of Assemblymembers' Phone #s
We understand that many people who want Albany reform cannot take a day
trip to Albany tomorrow. So if you can't go, please help us get reform
by calling your Assemblymember and your State Senator and encourage
them to pass the Reform Day proposals.
First, it is important to ask about specific reform
proposals. Please tell your Senator, Assemblymember, or their
staff to support the proposals that Reform Day advocates have
developed:
Ethics Reform: We
are pushing for an independent oversight agency for both the executive
and legislative branches, strengthening the ban on personal use of
campaign contributions, and other restrictions.
Rules Reform: Four years
ago, the Brennan Center for Justice released a report calling for
significant rules reform. Since then, very little action has been taken
to open up the legislative process, and "three men in a room" is still
the method of operation. We are calling for rules changes that allow
our legislators to be active participants in the process.
Campaign Finance Reform:
While some groups in the current reform coalition have not signed on to
"Clean Money, Clean Elections," we are calling for public financing of
campaigns, significantly lowering campaign contribution limits,
limiting transfers from "soft money" accounts, tightening reporting
requirements, and strengthening enforcement.
Redistricting Reform: We are
calling for an independent districting commission, rather than allowing
legislators to draw the district lines.

York City below, because it is extremely important for every DFNYC
member to call their Assemblymember, as the Democrats currently control
the Assembly, and most Assemblymembers in NYC are Democrats.

(6) Jimmy Dahroug Endorsed By
Democracy for
America! NYC Event May 14th
You probably received an email last week from Jim Dean, Chair
of Democracy for America and Governor Dean's brother. Jimmy Dahroug,
DFNYC-endorsed grassroots state senate candidate, has been
endorsed by DFA! Here's part of what Jim Dean had to say about
Jimmy:
Jimmy's
number one
priority is to reform the broken system in Albany. While the Albany
tradition of backroom deals continues every piece of progressive
legislation hangs in the balance. Jimmy knows that leadership is driven
by the grassroots, not special interests or big developers.
Health care for
all,
environmental protection, and economic empowerment are at the core of a
New York State Democratic majority. While our education system is at a
dangerous crossroads, Jimmy will fight to reform school funding to
provide a solid education for every child.
Save the date to
support Jimmy
Dahroug! Drs. Bonnie Maslin and Yehuda Nir
are generously opening their home
again for a fundraiser for him. So mark Wednesday, May 14th in your
calendar, and
check out this link at our website for more details:
http://dfnyc.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2159
Jimmy is running on Long Island in District 3, which is on the south
shore or Suffolk County and includes Brentwood, East Patchogue,
Shirley, Farmingville.
Taking back the state senate is a crucial election goal for 2008,
especially before the redistricting of congressional seats with the
2010 census. When Jimmy ran in 2006, he came very close to beating long
term incumbent Republican Ceasar Trunzo, and the election was one of
the two closest senate elections in the state.
In 2008, Jimmy is poised to win a rematch with a solid ground campaign
and the high Democratic turnout of a presidential election year. But
perhaps even more importantly, Jimmy is a great advocate for the issues
we stand for as grassroots progressives. He understands that we don't
just want to send Democrats to Albany, we want to send good,
progressive, courageous Democrats who will stand up for our values.

(7) Save the Date: Downtown Forum in
AD64 &
SD25 - Sunday, May 18th
Democracy for NYC is working with other groups to put together a forum
in the Democratic primaries in the 64th Assembly District and the 25th
State Senate District. We will host this forum on May 18th, most
likely in the afternoon so as not to conflict with evening events. We
are hosting this event on a Sunday to accommodate state legislators'
Albany schedules. A venue and more details will follow in the next
newsletter. If you would like to help out with this forum or you have
any questions, please contact us at

DFA
Community Loses a Dedicated and Dear
Friend: Cicely Nichols 1937 - 2008
~ Memorial Service Sunday, May 11
Cicely Nichols, a DEAN/DFA/DFNYC person since the very early days in
2002 has passed away from cancer. She spread the word and recruited
people to Governor Dean's campaign long before he was a popular
candidate, recording his speeches and hosting parties for people to
learn about him. She frequently attended the NYC4Dean meetings at the
McManus Democratic Club and was one of the very first people involved
with DFNYC, helping to start the West Village Linkup, along with her
daughters Jenny and Christy Speicher, also active in the DFA
community. She was a strong woman with a
life-long history of inspiring activism. Please
