(1) DFNYC Endorses Steve Harrison in the 13th CD Democratic Primary!

Democracy for NYC recently held a forum and endorsement vote in the Democratic Primary in NYC's 13th Congressional district, currently represented by incumbent Republican Vito Fossella.  Steve Harrison has won our endorsement with an unprecedented 100% of the vote!

We look forward to working with Steve Harrison to defeat Vito Fossella in the 2008 elections.  To learn more about Steve, check out his website:
http://www.steveharrisonforcongress.com/

DFNYC voting members, those who have been to three events in the past year, were eligible to vote.   Ballots could be downloaded at our website and mailed in, or turned in at events, between April 15th and April 29th.

On Tuesday, April 15, Democracy for NYC, Stonewall Democratic Club, Three Parks Independent Democratic Club, Village Reform Democratic Club and Truth 13 held a candidate forum for the Democratic primary in the 13th Congressional District:  Both candidates were invited.  Steve Harrison attended the forum.  Councilmember Recchia did not attend.

The 13th District covers Staten Island and part of southwest Brooklyn.  The 13th District is currently represented by Republican Vito Fossella.  As New York City's only Republican member of Congress, Fossella has been a rubber-stamp for the Bush-Cheney White House.

(3) Jimmy Dahroug Endorsed By Democracy for America!  NYC Event May 14th

Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America, recently sent an email to DFAers in New York announcing DFA's endorsement of Jimmy Dahroug!  Jimmy is a grassroots state senate candidate, also endorsed by DFNYC!  Here's part of what Jim Dean had to say about Jimmy:
Jimmy's number one priority is to reform the broken system in Albany. While the Albany tradition of backroom deals continues every piece of progressive legislation hangs in the balance. Jimmy knows that leadership is driven by the grassroots, not special interests or big developers.

Health care for all, environmental protection, and economic empowerment are at the core of a New York State Democratic majority. While our education system is at a dangerous crossroads, Jimmy will fight to reform school funding to provide a solid education for every child.
Wednesday, May 14th:  Drs. Bonnie Maslin and Yehuda Nir are generously opening their home again for a fundraiser for him.  Check out this link at our website for more details:
http://dfnyc.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2159

Jimmy's District:  Jimmy is running on Long Island in District 3, which is on the south shore or Suffolk County and includes Brentwood, East Patchogue, Shirley, Farmingville.

Taking back the state senate is a crucial election goal for 2008, especially before the redistricting of congressional seats with the 2010 census. When Jimmy ran in 2006, he came very close to beating long term incumbent Republican Ceasar Trunzo, and the election was one of the two closest senate elections in the state.

Why Jimmy? In 2008, Jimmy is poised to win a rematch with a solid ground campaign and the high Democratic turnout of a presidential election year. But perhaps even more importantly, Jimmy is a great advocate for the issues we stand for as grassroots progressives. He understands that we don't just want to send Democrats to Albany, we want to send good, progressive, courageous Democrats who will stand up for our values.

(4) Downtown Forum in Assembly Dist. 64 & Senate Dist. 25 - Sun. afternoon, May 18

Democracy for NYC is working with Manhattan Young Democrats to put together a forum in the Democratic primaries in the 64th Assembly District and the 25th State Senate District.  We will host this forum on May 18th, most likely in the afternoon so as not to conflict with evening events.  We are hosting this event on a Sunday to accommodate state legislators' Albany schedules.  A venue and more details will follow in the next newsletter.  If you would like to help out with this forum or you have any questions, please contact us at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

The invited candidates include (in alphabetical order):

Assembly District 64:  Luke Henry, Paul Newell, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver

Senate District 25:  Senator Martin Connor, Daniel Squadron

Congressional District 10: (tentative)  Kevin Powell, Congressman Ed Towns

(The 10th District is in Brooklyn, but it is difficult to schedule a Congressional forum, so we may add this race as well.)

(5) Victory for Human Rights in NYC:  Settlement Reached at Flor De Mayo Restaurant
       ~ A message from DFNYC's Bernadette Evangelist

On Friday, May 2nd, the workers at Flor De Mayo restaurant reached a settlement with the owners. The boycott of Flor De Mayo is now officially ended.

As discussed in our previous newsletters, Democracy for NYC has endorsed and participated in this important struggle.  Meanwhile, boycotts continue at Ollie's Noodle Shop Chain and Saigon Grill Restaurants on the Upper West Side and University Place.  Nail salon workers are also coming forward to join this movement.  We will keep you posted on new developments and upcoming actions from the Justice Will Be Served! campaign endorsed by DFNYC. They have extended their thanks to us for our help.

(6) Cicely Nichols 1937 - 2008:  Remembrances of great DFAer & Pictures
~ Memorial Service Sunday, May 11

We are sad to report that Cicely Nichols, a DEAN/DFA/DFNYC person since the very early days, has passed away from cancer.  Cicely was one of the first people I met in the Dean grassroots.  She spread the word and recruited people to Governor Dean's campaign long before he was a popular candidate, recording his speeches and hosting parties for people to learn about him.

She frequently attended the NYC4Dean meetings at the McManus Democratic Club.  She joined the people that made signs there for "visibility" events, and she was part of the "I am Howard Dean's Special Interest" project in Times' Square.  Visit this link at our website to see pictures:

Cicely was a woman who wasn't afraid to say what she thought. I will always remember her blunt and funny constructive criticism of my public speaking; feedback being necessary to the survival of a grassroots group.   Cicely was one of the very first people involved with DFNYC, helping to start the West Village Linkup, along with her daughters Jenny and Christy Speicher, also active in the DFA community.  She was a strong woman with a life-long history of inspiring activism, and we look forward to carrying on her legacy of activism with her daughters.  There's also a picture at our website of Cicely at a NARAL rally in 2004.

Memorial Service for Cicely Nichols:

Sunday, May 11th at 6:30pm
Greenwich House (the Music school building)
46 Barrow Street, Greenwich Village, New York City
(1/2 block west of 7th Avenue)
Link to map:  http://www.mapquest.com/mq/3-PKCV

Please RSVP to christineNewYork (at) gmail.com so they can have a head-count for food and drink.

The program will begin with remembrances, followed by a reception.  If you would like to share your memories of Cicely by participating in the program, or providing something in writing, that would be terrific; please contact Jenny and Christy to arrange it at:  This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , or phone: 212-929-6671.
