(1) Tonight!  Meet Jim Dean, Help Elect Jimmy Dahroug, & Defeat Joe Bruno!  May 14, 6-9pm

Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America, is joining us tonight for our DFNYC event to help Jimmy Dahroug, grassroots progressive Democrat endorsed by Democracy for America!  Jimmy's race for State Senate is crucial to putting roadblock Republican Joe Bruno out of power.  Democrats are just one seat away from taking back the state senate, so if we help Jimmy to victory this fall, the Republicans, lead by Joe Bruno, will no longer be able to stop much needed reform on the environment, healthcare, civil rights, and many other issues.  Join us tonight!

What:  Jim Dean event for Jimmy Dahroug, hosted by DFNYC

When:  Tonight, Wednesday, May 14th, 6-9pm

Where:
The home of Dean/DFA/DFNYC/Dahroug supporters Drs. Bonnie Maslin and Yehuda Nir, 1050 Park Avenue at 87th Street.

More info about the event:  http://dfnyc.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2159

Jimmy's District:  Jimmy is running on Long Island in District 3, which is on the south shore or Suffolk County and includes Brentwood, East Patchogue, Shirley, Farmingville.

Taking back the state senate is a crucial election goal for 2008, especially before the redistricting of congressional seats with the 2010 census. When Jimmy ran in 2006, he came very close to beating long term incumbent Republican Ceasar Trunzo, and the election was one of the two closest senate elections in the state.

Why Jimmy?
In 2008, Jimmy is poised to win a rematch with a solid ground campaign and the high Democratic turnout of a presidential election year. But perhaps even more importantly, Jimmy is a great advocate for the issues we stand for as grassroots progressives. He understands that we don't just want to send Democrats to Albany, we want to send good, progressive, courageous Democrats who will stand up for our values.

DFA sent an email when they endorsed Jimmy Dahroug.  Here's part of what Jim Dean had to say:

Jimmy's number one priority is to reform the broken system in Albany. While the Albany tradition of backroom deals continues every piece of progressive legislation hangs in the balance. Jimmy knows that leadership is driven by the grassroots, not special interests or big developers.

Health care for all, environmental protection, and economic empowerment are at the core of a New York State Democratic majority. While our education system is at a dangerous crossroads, Jimmy will fight to reform school funding to provide a solid education for every child.

In previous newsletters, we mentioned that we were also going to host the candidates from the 10th Congressional District in Brooklyn.  This turns out to be unfeasible.  But we are planning a forum for that race on either May 27th or 28th, when Congress is out of session.

(4) Victory for Human Rights in NYC:  Settlement Reached at Flor De Mayo Restaurant

       ~ A message from DFNYC's Bernadette Evangelist

On Friday, May 2nd, the workers at Flor De Mayo restaurant reached a settlement with the owners. The boycott of Flor De Mayo is now officially ended.

As discussed in our previous newsletters, Democracy for NYC has endorsed and participated in this important struggle.  Meanwhile, boycotts continue at Ollie's Noodle Shop Chain and Saigon Grill Restaurants on the Upper West Side and University Place.  Nail salon workers are also coming forward to join this movement.  We will keep you posted on new developments and upcoming actions from the Justice Will Be Served! campaign endorsed by DFNYC. They have extended their thanks to us for our help.

(5)  Seeking Activists Interested in Student Loan Issues - Signup at our website!

Longtime DFNYC member Jeremiah Frei-Pearson is coordinating DFNYC's work on issues regarding student loans and is working to build a network of activists in New York City that can be called upon to contact government leaders in support of progressive education legislation.

DFNYC's past work has included support of the Higher Education Access Act of 2007 and the successful effort to get the College Cost Reduction Act of 2007 passed.

Current efforts are focused on the Student Borrower's Bill of Rights (S. 511) which was introduced by NY Senator Hillary Clinton but has taken a backseat during the presidential campaign. With that campaign entering a new phase, perhaps Senator Clinton and her colleagues can be persuaded to move this legislation onto the Senate floor for passage into law.

If you have an interest in these issues and wish to be part of this network, visit this link at our website:  http://dfnyc.org/content/view/2215/16/
