"We Are ALL Arizona!" March Across Brooklyn Bridge Thursday, July 29

Immigrants & their allies to march across Brooklyn Bridge declaring,
"We Are ALL Arizona!"

Thursday, July 29
9:30 a.m. Gather at Cadman Plaza, Brooklyn
(A/C trains to High St. OR 2/3/4/5/R trains to Borough Hall)

10:00 a.m.  March across Brooklyn Bridge
11:00 a.m. Press Conference at Foley Square

On July 29, Arizona's new law legalizing racial profiling, known as SB 1070, is scheduled to go into effect. In response, immigrants and their allies from New York and New Jersey will march across the Brooklyn Bridge to call for the repeal of Arizona's unconscionable law. SB 1070 makes it a crime to be undocumented and requires the police to check the immigration status of those suspected of being undocumented. Immigrant communities, elected officials, and citizens alike will gather as part of a new civil rights movement to condemn SB 1070—which many have likened to the racial segregation laws of the past—as a clear violation of the most basic civil and human rights that must be immediately stopped. Further, they will demand an end to all programs like SB 1070 that target immigrant communities for mass detentions and deportations here in New York City and across the country.

The "We Are All Arizona" march in NYC on July 29th will raise a platform by local immigrant rights organizations including: (1) a call for an end to SB 1070 and the proliferation of copycat legislation now surfacing in over 20 states; (2) a call for an end to the use of racial profiling; (3) a demand for just and humane immigration reform that upholds family unity and human rights over increased enforcement; and (4) a call for an end to related programs such as 287(g), Criminal Alien Program, and Secure Communities (now in NY State) that use local law enforcement to tear families apart.

Sponsored by Families for Freedom, Churches United to Save and Heal, New York Sanctuary Coalition, DRUM, and VAMOS Unidos.

Rally at MLB Headquarters to Move the All-Star Game from Arizona
Written by Bernadette Evangelist
Tuesday, 29 June 2010

In April, Arizona shocked the nation by passing SB1070, one of the most discriminatory, anti-immigrant state laws in recent American history.  In New York, many of us wondered what we could do to fight back.

Here’s our chance.  Democracy for NYC has joined the NYCLU and other organizations (list in formation) in co-sponsoring this action to bring pressure on Arizona to repeal this discriminatory law.  Throughout history, sports have played an important role in putting pressure on governments to make policy change, including in Apartheid South Africa and in Arizona when the state finally agreed to recognize Martin Luther King, Jr. day after the NFL moved the Superbowl out of Arizona.

Rally at Major League Baseball Headquarters to Move the 2011 All-Star Game Out of Arizona!

When: Noon on Thursday, July 8
Where: 245 Park Ave. (46th Street and Park Avenue)

The 2011 Major League Baseball All-Star Game is scheduled for Phoenix next July and pressure is building on MLB Commissioner Bud Selig to move the game out of Arizona to send a clear message to Arizona: Baseball is all-American but discrimination is not.
