United for Change Now! Labor & Immigrant Rights & Jobs for All! March & Rally, Saturday, May 1, 2010
Assemble at 11 a.m. at Foley Square • Worth Street (between Centre & Lafayette Streets)
A,C,E trains to Chambers Street/R,W trains to City Hall/4,5,6 trains to Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall
Democracy for NYC is proud to join with members of scores of labor
unions, immigrants' rights organizations and community groups united
with the employed and unemployed, the documented and the undocumented,
the organized and the unorganized, the people of diverse racesa nd
ethnicities who live and work in New York City.
We are facing the most acute economic crisis for the working-class majority in our lifetimes. The recession has led to a new wave of austerity policies for working people, as the banks are bailed out using our tax dollars, and the jobs and services on which we depend are being destroyed.
Our current immigration policy has had a devastating impact on immigrant communities. And that devastation hurts us all. We believe that another economic policy is possible—one that supports rather than destroys the lives of the working-class majority, one that supports rather than attacks the traditional source of New York's wealth—immigrants. That's the policy we demand this May Day.
This event is sponsored by Alliance for Labor & Immigrants Rights & Jobs for All!, a coalition of the major labor unions in New York City and major civil rights and immigrants’ rights organizations including to date:

Rally to Save St. Vincent's Today! |

Today, Saturday April 24, New Yorkers will march and rally to save St. Vincent's Hospital in Greenwich Village. The hospital has been a crucial pillar in the community and it needs all the support it can get.
Here is the pertinent information:
For the march:
When: 1:00pm
Where: 9th Avenue at 25th Street
For the rally:
When: 2:00pm
Where: St. Vincent's Hospital (7th Avenue at 12th Street)
Former City Council candidate and Chelsea resident Yetta Kurland is one of the lead attorneys for the resistance to the facility's closure. Here is what she has to say about the matter with the information about today's call to action:
I hope you will join me tomorrow at the March and Rally which will start at 1pm at 25th Street and 9th Avenue and meet at St. Vincent's at 2pm and don't forget to bring a sign or poster that lets our elected officials know we deserve more than "urgent care" and that we demand a Hospital, not an Urgent Care Center, to serve our community.
I also want to let you know about the Community Town Hall Meeting, which will be held April 30, 2010 at 7pm at the Hudson Guild (9th Avenue location) to update everyone on our legal efforts to stop St. Vincent's wrongful closure.
I was disappointed yesterday that the Bankruptcy Court denied our stay to stop the closure. So many of us have stories of being deeply connected to St. Vincent's. The cultural, medical and historic loss will be felt for a very long time.
But this is only beginning our or efforts. Now more than ever, must fight to ensure comprehensive health care for our community. To do that, we need to ensure our community has a voice in these bankruptcy proceedings.
We will continue. I promise we will not give up until we have answers to what went wrong at St. Vincent's, until we have a new hospital with better management that comports with the needs and look and vision of our community.
Finally, I promise to fight to ensure that our voice, the community's voice, is heard in this process.
In solidarity,
Yetta
