Happy New Year! Three Linkups Tonight, January 6th
Written by Bernadette Evangelist
Wednesday, 06 January 2010

Happy New Year!

Unbelievably enough, we are already into the New Year of 2010—so we wish the best to the DFNYC community!  Here's hoping that 2010 brings a more progressive outlook to the US - but since hope doesn't bring change by itself, here's to the work that we'll all be doing to help make it happen!

Big Linkup later, stay tuned for specifics . . .

Three Linkups tonight, January 6, Upper West Side, Sheepshead Bay, and Sunnyside

The Upper West Side Linkup will take place, with hosts Bernadette Evangelist and Sally Swisher, who would welcome anyone from any of the cancelled linkups who is stranded without their normal political discussion.  Our main topic will be the sorry state of healthcare reform - and what we can do at this late date.  If you come with ideas, you'll be ahead of most of us - but come anyway, maybe we'll discover something.

When:    7 PM, Tonight, Wed., Jan. 6
Where:   The Parlour, South side of W. 86th Street, between Broadway &West End Ave.,  Manhattan (half a block from the #1 train)

The Sheepshead Bay Linkup will also occur, with hosts Annette Mont and Estelle Glasser.  The agenda for this linkup is also relaxed, so come with good ideas on how to move forward.

When:    7 PM, Tonight, Wed., Jan. 6
Where:   Wyckoff-Bennett Homestead 1669 E. 22nd St.

The Sunnyside Linkup with host Dan Jacoby will go ahead on schedule.

When:    7:30 PM, Tonight, Wed., Jan. 6
Where:    Bliss St. Station restaurant, corner of 47th St. & Greenpoint Ave.

DFNYC is planning a big linkup to be held in late January for the whole community with invited speaker Jim Dean.  We will all gather to properly kick off the new year and discuss some exciting plans for DFNYC going forward.  Be on the look-out for more information and plan to get together to share food and drink . . . and re-energize each other for the year to come.

Since we've been working on this big event, many of the local Linkups have arranged to skip January's regularly scheduled meetings—which would have been tonight, Wednesday, January 6.

The cancelled linkups are:
Astoria, Bayside, West Villiage

DEMOCRACY FOR NYC APPLAUDS HOWARD DEAN

Democracy for NYC is proud to stand with Gov. Howard Dean in support and appreciation of his courage in challenging Congress and the White House to actually provide the American people with the affordable healthcare they need—and that they elected Democrats to get.  Dean reflects the views, frustration, and sense of betrayal of DFNYC members along with other progressive healthcare advocates, and ordinary citizens who have hoped and believed that their voices would be heard in the crafting of this so-called healthcare legislation.

Along with the Governor, we call on our Senators and Representatives to hold strong on their promises to us.  They should not send a bill to the President unless it has a way to control costs and keeps health insurance affordable to all by including a strong public option or some other mechanism to provide competition with the insurance industry and pharmaceutical companies.  Without this, we agree with Gov. Dean that the "individual mandate" should be removed from the bill.

Dean is reminding Congress that they work for the people, and the people aren't interested in compromise after compromise until "reform" is a giveaway to private insurance companies at the expense of the American people.  We agree.

Democracy for NYC (DFNYC) is a volunteer driven, non-profit
political action committee and part of a national coalition of local groups committed to the ideals espoused by Democracy for America, the organization founded by Howard Dean.

Written by Bernadette Evangelist
Wednesday, 16 December 2009

You are invited to evaluate and testify on what may become your new voting system for New York City.

Bo Lipari, the only member of the Citizens Advisory Committee with a technical background and long advocate of verifiable voting systems, has said: "Based on my evaluation of the data I conclude that no matter how far they’ve come and how close they now are, the voting systems under consideration have not yet met all of New York’s requirements. I will therefore vote No on recommending approval of these systems for certification."  His entire report, "My Vote on NY Voting Machine Certification," can be read at http://www.bolipari.com/boblog/
