Urgent Health Care Action Needed!

Senator Rockefeller's and Senator Schumer's amendments adding a public option to the Senate Finance Committee's proposed bill are scheduled for Tuesday, September 29!  Senator Schumer has been a strong supporter of a public option (although a little unclear on how strong that option would be.)

It's vital to get the public option into the Finance Committee's bill, as that would ensure that it is included in all the bills coming out of committee.

Call (or Fax) Today (Sept. 28) or Early Tomorrow (Sept 29):  CALL: 202 224-6542 (Washington Office), 212 486-4430 (New York Office); FAX: 202 228-3027 (Washington Office), 212 486-7693 (New York Office)

When you call, thank Senator Schumer for his support so far and tell him that you, his constituent, want him to support the strongest public option that he can (Sen. Rockefeller's amendment is more muscular than Schumer's, so let Schumer know that you want his support for Rockefeller.)  If you'd actually prefer single payer -- Medicare for All -- tell him that.

It doesn't matter if you've called before.  Call again, and let our Senator know where you stand.

Stella D'oro Rally Friday, October 2, 3-7 p.m.

Keep Stella D'oro in the Bronx:  Rally with Workers and Supporters at the Stella D'oro Plant

When:  Friday, October 2, 3 p.m.-7 p.m.
Where:  Stella D'oro - 237th Street & Broadway

It is crunch time at Stella D'oro! Brynwood Partners, the company's private equity owners, intend to shut down the Bronx facility as early as the first days of October. They have a deal in principle with North Carolina-based manufacturing and marketing firm Lance, Inc. to buy the brand and relocate production to a non-union plant in Ashland, Ohio. But the deal still hasn't closed -- and we can stop it!

Please join the courageous women and men of Stella D'oro -- who have stood up for themselves and for the entire labor movement in New York -- as they rally to keep their plant open -- and their jobs -- this Friday, October 2nd, outside the plant gates at 237th Street and Broadway. Take the 1 train to 238th Street and walk one block south.

Keep Stella D'oro in the Bronx! Rally & March Friday, September 25

Stop October Closing of Stella D'Oro: Protest at Goldman Sachs on Friday, September 25th!

What: Rally & March with Stella D'oro Workers and Supporters

When: Friday, September 25th, 5:00 p.m rally, March to City Hall immediately following

Where:  Rally at Goldman Sachs Headquarters
85 Broad Street (4 or 5 train to Bowling Green)
March to City Hall (rally 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.)

Two months after returning to their jobs after an 11-month strike against deep concession demands, the courageous workers at the Bronx-based Stella D’oro Biscuit Co. are still fighting.

A stunning decision by the National Labor Relations Board, which found that Stella D’oro had bargained in bad faith, returned the strikers to work—with back pay and no concessions—in early July. The strikers had offered to return to their jobs under the terms of their old contract in May, but management, intent on breaking the union, had refused.

On Wednesday, September 23, the company’s union-busting owner, the private equity firm Brynwood Partners, said it had reached a deal to sell Stella D’oro, and that production will be relocated to Ohio by early October.

Join the Stella D'oro workers and supporters at a rally on Friday, September 25, at the headquarters of Goldman Sachs, a major investor in Lance, Inc. The group will then march to City Hall to encourage the City Council to take action to save the Bronx jobs. The council passed a non-binding resolution July 29 in support of the Stella workers.
