Volunteer for Election Protection: Be a Legal Monitor on Sept. 14
What: Attorneys and law students are needed to be legal monitors at poll sites to protect voters rights on a crucial election day in New York City. In most past elections, there have been significant complaints about problems at the polls in certain areas, problems that have led to voters being disenfranchised. Where: In the Bronx and other areas throughout New York City. The training session will likely take place in Manhattan.
When: On Tuesday Sept. 14th, lawyers are needed all day from the opening of the polls at 6am to the closing at 9pm. There will be information and training sessions in the days and weeks to come. Who: We are in need of licensed attorneys (in NY and other jurisdictions, including international) and law students. You will not be working on behalf of any candidate; you will be working to ensure that the system operates in a manner that is fair to all candidates. Why: To protect the rights of voters. To gain training in election law. To meet key people involved in election protection and grassroots activism in New York City. To ensure the system works as it should and that people are not unfairly turned away from the polls. To have fun! Contact: Contact details coming soon, in the meantime, contact Tracey at tdenton-at-dfnyc.org (replace -at- with @). |

(between Broadway & Amsterdam), with hosts Bernadette Evangelist

When Arizona passed its draconian anti-immigration law which is now going through the court system, Democracy for NYC members searched for ways to stop the terrible law and stand up for civil rights: ~ DFNYC joined NY-based immigrants' rights, civil rights and social justice organizations to send a letter urging Commissioner Kelly to condemn AZ anti-immigrant law. Click here to go to the page here at our website where we've posted the letter. ~ Bonnie Maslin made buttons that say "I Am an Illegal Immigrant," which were passed out at our candidate forum in May. ~ Democracy for NYC members at Linkups decided to send a letter to the Major League Baseball Players' Association urging a vote among its members to boycott the 2011 All Star Game unless that game scheduled to be in Arizona is either moved or the discriminatory law (SB 1070) is rescinded. Click here to go to the page here at our website where we've posted the letter. |
