"Sicko" opens: You can support universal healthcare
Written by Dan Jacoby
Friday, 29 June 2007

Michael Moore's latest documentary, Sicko, has opened. You can see theaters and showtimes here.

After seeing the film, make a call, send an email, or write a letter to your representatives and ask them to co-sponsor John Conyers' National Health Insurance Act (H.R. 676) which is endorsed by Democracy for NYC and is supported by Michael Moore.

The National Health Insurance Act provides private health care that is publicly financed by expanding Medicare to cover all Americans and cutting out the insurance companies which Moore lambastes in his film. It is a "single payer" system. With National Health Insurance, supplemental private and not for profit insurance would still be available to those who wanted it - just in case you love your insurance company.

The full text of the bill is available here.

Who isn't on the bill yet? Gary Ackerman (D-5th Congressional District) District office phone: 718-423-2154 Gregory Meeks (D-6th Congressional District) District office phone: 718-725-6000 Joseph Crowley (D-7th Congressional District) District office phone: 718-779-1400 Nydia Velazquez (D-12th Congressional District) District office phone: 718-599-3658 Vito Fosella (R-13th Congressional District) District office phone: 718-356-8400

Statement from Governor Howard Dean, DNC Chair:

"We're delighted that the first of the DNC-sanctioned debates will present voters with a truly innovative opportunity to engage directly with our outstanding Democratic candidates. The Democratic Party is committed to helping usher in a new era in American politics that recognizes campaigns require a two-way dialogue between voters and their candidates on the future of our country. This historic partnership between CNN, YouTube/Google, and the South Carolina Democratic Party helps move political campaigns in that direction, and marks a new era in American politics. I am pleased that the DNC could help play a role in facilitating this revolutionary and unique event, and that our strong field of Democratic candidates will get to share their vision of leadership for America's future with voters across the country, and across the internet."
