(4) Kevin Powell Earns the Endorsement of Stonewall Democrats of NYC

Kevin Powell, DFNYC-endorsed candidate for Congress in Brooklyn, has been endorsed by the Stonewall Democratic Club of NYC. Stonewall Democrats' mission is to advocate for legislation that guarantees equality and fairness for the LGBT community and support candidates for elected office who support these values.  LGBT equality is an important principle for the DFA Community as well, as Howard Dean's brave step to ratify equal rights for gay couples in Vermont against conservative opposition was a cornerstone of his 2004 presidential campaign.

With Congress having the power to vote on crucial equality legislation, such as ENDA (which would prevent companies from discriminating on the basic of sexual orientation) and marriage equality, we congratulate Kevin on this terrific endorsement.

(5) Report: Obama Outreach at Seaport w/DFNYC & Luke Henry's Campaign

This past Sunday, July 13, DFNYC volunteers joined up with Luke Henry's campaign and other NYC Obama supporters to campaign for Senator Obama at the South Street Seaport.  We'll have video and pictures soon at the community section of our website, http://dfnyc.org

New York is not a "swing state," but we can still help Senator Barack Obama win the election by doing outreach to tourists here in New York City.  At the Seaport, we met people from all over, handed out literature, and signed them up to support Obama's campaign.  We had voter registration forms ready for New Yorkers not yet registered, as turning up the popular vote is key to victory this November.

To find out about more opportunities to help Obama in New York city, visit:

http://my.barackobama.com (Click on "find events" on the right)

We plan to have future events in this newsletter, and please let us know if you are planning an event we can list.  Email us at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

BlackVoices on Kevin Powell
Written by Michael Minn
Monday, 14 July 2008

BlackVoices.com's Jawn Murray recently posted a nice article on DFNYC-endorsed candidate Kevin Powell, running for Congress in NY's 10th district.

Education and the economy and ending the war in and getting universal healthcare for all Americans, are some of the key issues (I) will be fighting for.

First and foremost, as a product of the ghetto, a product of public schools, a product of government help to go to college, I know how critical an education was to my life. I do a lot of work with young people, with youth, in New York City , and around the country, and that is the number one thing that has got many of us stuck. Limited education, limited skills, means limited life opportunities, and more than likely a life of being stuck in poverty, in misery, and many of the vicious cycles that keep us down, like early pregnancies, drug and alcohol abuse, and trips back and forth to prison...

God has blessed me to be the rare political candidate who really has legit community organizing credentials and a pop culture and entertainment background, and we are using everything I've learned from both sides to win this election.

YouTube - Volunteers for Jimmy Dahroug
Written by Tracey Denton
Thursday, 10 July 2008

On Saturday, July 5th, a group of us went out to Long Island to team up with some local Dems to help DFNYC-endorsed candidate Jimmy Dahroug in his race for the New York State Senate. We were knocking on doors to get petition signatures to get him on the ballot (a hurdle all candidates must go through) and talking to voters.

I took some video of volunteers petitioning and talking about why they are helping Jimmy, and Jimmy talking to voters. For those of you that know longtime DFNYC members Dana Northcraft and Steve Behar, you'll love their starring roles.

Jimmy has an important filing deadline on Friday. Please make a contribution if you can, even a small one. Having a strong filing is key to helping raise more money and awareness for this race, and what makes a filing "strong" is not just the amount of money, but the number of donors. You can contribute by credit card at his website:
