Opens June 24, 2008
Museum of the City of New York
1220 Fifth Avenue (at 103rd Street)
New York, NY
www.mcny.org
From the time that it hosted the first presidential inauguration in 1789,
New York City has always played a pivotal role in national politics.
Campaigning for President: New York and the American Election
explores the effects of New York on the strategies of presidential
electoral campaigns for over 200 years and highlights the role of New York
candidates, third parties, powerbrokers, and voters in the race for president.
The exhibition features rarely seen, provocative, and often humorous campaign
memorabilia from the collections of the Museum of Democracy, including a
commemorative coat button from George Washington’s inauguration, a James Garfield
oil lamp, A "Robert Kennedy for President" paper dress, and an original copy of
the famous "Dewey Defeats Truman" headline. Presented in collaboration with the
Museum of Democracy.

environmental initiatives in government since 1983.
Don is committed to making quality health care affordable to all New

(5) Help Carol Shea-Porter's Re-Election - Jim Dean event in NYC, Monday,
June 30
Congressional Representative Carol
Shea-Porter from New Hampshire is one of the great success stories of the 2006
elections in which the Democrats took back Congress. She was elected
with a terrific grassroots organization, with many people that came out of the
the Howard Dean and Wesley Clark presidential campaigns of 2004. She
has been a strong supporter of progressive values in Congress, from ending the
Iraq to blocking unfair trade agreements that hurt American workers.
Jim Dean will be doing an event for Carol Shea-Porter's
re-election in NYC on Monday evening June 30. Save the date and stay
tuned for details.

On Friday, May 2nd, the workers at Flor De Mayo restaurant reached a
settlement with the owners. The boycott of Flor De Mayo is now officially
ended.
As discussed in our previous newsletters, Democracy
for NYC has endorsed and participated in this important struggle.
Meanwhile,
boycotts continue at Ollie's Noodle Shop Chain and Saigon Grill
Restaurants on the Upper West Side and University Place. Nail
salon workers are also coming forward to join this movement.
We will keep you posted on new developments and upcoming actions from
the Justice
Will Be Served! campaign endorsed by DFNYC. They have extended their thanks to
us for our help.

(9) Seeking
Activists Interested in Student Loan Issues - Signup at our
website!
Longtime DFNYC member Jeremiah
Frei-Pearson is coordinating DFNYC's work on issues regarding student
loans and is working to build a
network of activists in New York City that can be called upon to contact
government leaders in support of progressive
education legislation.
DFNYC's past work
has included support of the Higher Education Access Act of 2007 and the
successful effort to get the College Cost
Reduction Act of 2007 passed.
Current efforts are focused on
the Student Borrower's Bill of Rights (S. 511) which was introduced by
NY Senator Hillary Clinton but has taken a backseat during the
presidential campaign. With that campaign entering a new phase, perhaps Senator
Clinton and her colleagues can
be persuaded to move this legislation onto the Senate floor for passage into
law.
If you have an interest in these issues and wish to be
part of this network, visit this link at our website: http://dfnyc.org/content/view/2215/16/

Tuesday, 17 June 2008 |
Saturday, June 21, 2008, 3-5PM
Wycoff Bennett Homestead
1669 East 22nd Street
Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY
RSVP and info: annettemont (at) optonline.net
Sheepshead Bay Linkup host Annette Mont will be hosting a DFA Unity Action Event
to write postcards to Democratic voters in support of presumptive Democratic
Presidential Nominee Barack Obama. With the difficult primary process finally over
and a little over four months until the election, now is the time to start building
the unity that will be needed to put Barack in the White House. Hand-written letters
and postcards get more attention than machine-created form letters...plus it's a great
opportunity to make some new friends in the NYC progressive community.
