Democracy for NYC has been hosting letter writing events where volunteers write letters to progressive Democrats in swing states (members of Democracy for America) encouraging them to volunteer for Obama and Democrats running for Congress in their area.

Image

From right to left: Julia, Luz, Tracey, Alice, Phyllis & Carlos write letters to members of DemocracyforAmerica.com in Colorado, encouraging them to volunteer for Obama, and Congressional candidates Dina Titus and Jill Derby.

The letter writing events have been so much fun! On Sunday and Tuesday, we gathered at the Gramercy Park apartment of DFNYCer Phyllis. (Pictured above.) Carlos has hosted several letter writing events at the tables at Whole Foods on Houston. At one event, two French people saw our Obama sign and we drafted them to sit down and write letters. Last night I got a call from Gary in Nevada. He thanked me for my letter. He’s a precinct captain in Las Vegas, and he’s supporting Obama and Dina Titus for Congress.

Follow-up needed: Now we need to call the people who received the letters to find out if more of them are volunteering. If you would like to make some phone calls from home, I can send you numbers and a script. Email me at tdenton-at-dfnyc.org, replace -at- with @.

How Robert Wexler helped a governor targeted by Karl Rove
Written by Tracey_Keij_Denton
Tuesday, 07 October 2008
Democracy for NYC has strongly supported Congressman Robert Wexler, and he has twice been to New York City for events we have co-sponsored. This email about Wexler was sent by former governor of Alabama Don Siegelman, who was falsely attacked by Karl Rove:

- - - - - - -

Dear Friend,

I am Don Siegelman, a Democrat and I served as the Governor of Alabama until Karl Rove targeted me in a political prosecution. My story, as described in CBS's 60 Minutes is just one example of how Karl Rove subverted our Constitution and corrupted the integrity of the Justice Department.

I was convicted of something that The New York Times said,"… has never been a crime." A former Republican Attorney General of Arizona said on CBS's 60 Minutes, that "they couldn't beat Siegelman fair and square so they targeted him with this prosecution." I was THE blue dot in a red state that became Karl Rove's target.

My investigation was started by Karl Rove's client, the Alabama Attorney General, and I was brought to trial one month before the election, by a U S Attorney who was the wife of my Republican opponent's campaign manager- a thirty year friend and political associate of Rove's. After the trial, a Republican lawyer gave sworn testimony to the House Judiciary Committee that Karl Rove was directing the DOJ to prosecute me.

My sentence was enhanced for speaking out against the political nature of the prosecution. Handcuffed and shackled, I was immediately removed from the courtroom and taken to a maximum security prison where I was put into solitary confinement.

Nine months later, I was released in an extraordinary ruling of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals saying there are "substantial questions of law and fact likely to result in reversal".

Robert Wexler called for an investigation into my case, and has stood firm against those who prefer to run out the clock, and let those who committed the real crimes get off the hook. No one has fought harder for me or for bringing Karl Rove to justice than Robert Wexler.

But this fight is not about me, it's about our country, restoring the law, and bringing Karl Rove to justice.

Robert Wexler has shown that strong Congressional leadership is our best insurance against the abuse of power that Karl Rove has waged against the American People.

Now it's up to us to continue this fight for justice and to restore our democracy.

Now, we must fight for Robert Wexler. Please help me keep him in office by contributing to his campaign.

We must send a message that it is un-American to have US Attorneys targeting people because of their party affiliation. If they can bring a Governor down, they can do it to you or a member of your family.

We must also send a message to Robert Wexler's challengers: "We will not let you will not remove our allies in Congress who stand with us in this fight against the subversion of our democracy."

Please help Robert Wexler push back against his self-funded challengers.

If you are angry at what this administration has done to America and if you share my disappointment at the passiveness of some Members of our Democratic Congress, then we must reward and defend those, like Robert Wexler, who has never quit fighting on our behalf.

Click here to show the rest of Congress we will support those who support our ideals.

The tough work is left to be done. We must continue to fight until Karl Rove and others have been held accountable. It is now time for Rove and the others who abused power and used the DOJ as a political weapon to be brought to justice.

With your help, we can be certain Robert Wexler will be standing with us when we win our victory and return America to its best ideals.

Now it's time for us to take action. We have to ensure that Robert Wexler has the money to win re-election.

Please join me in donating now.

With every best wish, I am sincerely,

Don Siegelman

DFNYC Joined "March Against Hate" In Astoria Last Weekend
Written by Josh Silverstein
Thursday, 11 September 2008
Our very own Jeremiah Frei-Pearson, Bernadette Evangelist and Dan Jacoby joined the rally and March Against Hate this past Sunday in Astoria, Queens. The event was in response to a hate crime committed against members of Carmen's House, a sanctuary for gay and trans-gendered young people. The Queens Chronicle covered the rally as did our intrepid DFNYC photographer as you can see below.

9/22/08: From Jeremiah: "Astoria is like New York City - our diversity is one of our greatest strengths. The fact that there are people who attack others because of their sexual orientation is very sad, and it threatens to turn that strength into a weakness. On the other hand, the community's response to these hate crimes should make us very proud. We had about 75 people with us when we began marching, and the march ended with over 100 people because folks on the street saw why we were marching and joined in. That says a lot. The community made it clear that those who commit hate crimes do not represent the majority of Astorians. Many thanks to all of the DFNYCers who attended and helped put this event together."

NOW Endorses Steve Harrison For Congress!

Feminists pick Harrison over Michael McMahon in NY 13th Congressional District in Tues., Sept. 9 Democratic Primary

August 20 Press Conference

(Staten Island/Brooklyn) -- The National Organization for Women (NOW) will announce its formal endorsement of Steve Harrison as the strongest supporter of women's rights in the race for New York's 13th Congressional District (Staten Island/Southwest Brooklyn) Democratic nomination in a 2:00 PM Wednesday Aug. 20 press conference at the Staten Island Hotel, 1415 Richmond Ave., Staten Island, NY.

Harrison is running against New York City Councilman Michael McMahon in the Democratic Primary which will be held Tues., Sept. 9.

"NOW PAC is pleased to endorse Steve Harrison for the U.S. House of Representatives from New York," said NOW Political Action Committee Chair Kim Gandy. "We look forward to voters in Staten Island and Brooklyn sending a strong supporter of women's rights to Washington. Steve has the values we need to improve the lives of women and families in this country."

The Brooklyn Queens NOW Political Action Committee (BQ NOW PAC) recommended that the Washington-based organization headed by Gandy endorse Harrison. With a member-base of over 500,000 NOW is the largest organization of feminists in the country.

"We were impressed with Steve Harrison's grasp of and support of our core issues: constitutional equality for women, reproductive rights, equal economic opportunity, stopping violence against women and ending gender and sexual orientation discrimination," said Shirley Ranz, the chair of the local NOW PAC.

BQ-NOW Vice President Rachelle Suissa added, "If given the opportunity, Steve will definitely be the candidate who holds true to the values of women and minorities and who works to uphold civil rights and liberties each and every day. His ideology, experience, and candor all speak for themselves when it comes to these issues."

McMahon's record opposing abortion and his lukewarm support of other gender issues in general while a member of the New York City Council was also a factor in the endorsement, NOW officials said.

"McMahon is a political conservative who opposed choice when his vote counted in NYC Council," noted BQ NOW Secretary Sherry Rogers. "We cannot support someone who waivers in his support of our issues to placate his RTL constituency. They have the Republicans for that. Who will speak for women; Steve Harrison!"

Harrison said he won't let women of the 13th district down. "I am honored to receive this endorsement. In Congress I will fight for reproductive rights and to end gender discrimination," Harrison said.

In 2006 against Republican incumbent Vito Fossella, Harrison received a higher percentage of the vote than any Democrat ever under the Congressional District's current geographic configuration. The scandal-ridden Fossella is not seeking re-election.
