After a forum on Sunday, May 23rd and voting period extending from the forum through our June 2 Linkups last week, Democracy for NYC is proud to announce that we have endorsed the following candidates in the 2010 Democratic primaries in NYC (for results in each race, scroll down):

No Endorsements:  In several races, we did not endorse a candidate.  DFNYC endorsement rules provide that a candidate must receive 55% of the vote to be endorsed.

DFNYC Endorses Bill Thompson for Mayor

DFNYC is proud to announce our endorsement of Bill Thompson for Mayor of New York City.  As mayor, Thompson will continue to ensure that government provides services that improve the quality of life for all New Yorkers.  He is dedicated to creating jobs, enacting positive reforms to our education system, assisting small businesses, providing real affordable housing, and supporting the needs of all New York communities.

Help elect Bill Thompson by volunteering and voting.

Remember to cast your vote Tuesday, November 3, not only for Mayor, but for City Comptroller, and Public Advocate.  Depending on your borough, you will also be voting for District Attorney, Borough President, City Council Member, and Civil Court Judges and Supreme Court Justices.

DFNYC Endorses Yetta Kurland!

Democracy for NYC is proud to announce that our members have voted to endorse Yetta Kurland in the Democratic primary in Council District 3.  Voting opened on July 1st and closed on July 10th.  Here are the results:

Yetta Kurland:  69%

Christine Quinn:  31%

Maria Passanante-Derr:  0%

About the vote:
We have been asking DFNYC members through our email newsletters, as well as at Linkups and other events, to suggest 2009 Democratic primary races in which DFNYC should hold endorsement votes of its members.  (Please see this page at our website for more details:  http://dfnyc.org/content/view/2398/15/)  The responses thus far indicated that the DFNYC community is interested in Council District 3. 
DFNYC members who attended three DFNYC events in the past year were eligible to vote.

Announcement: Early Endorsement Results - 2009

Democracy for NYC recently held early endorsement voting.  Recognizing that success at the grassroots level requires developing strong support early, we developed the DFNYC Early Candidate Endorsement process.  It is reserved for candidates who are active members of DFNYC, and unique in their long-term commitment to the ideals, progressive grass roots activism, and dedication to the principles of Democracy for NYC.  Here is a list of the candidates that were eligible for early endorsement (voting took place through March 5th), and the results:

Norman Siegel - 70% in favor of endorsement

Steve Behar - 87% in favor of endorsement

Democracy for NYC endorses Luke Henry and Kevin Powell

DFNYC recently held an endorsement vote in the Democratic primary races for US Congress in District 10 (Brooklyn) and NY State Assembly in District 64 (lower Manhattan), Democracy for NYC members voted to endorse:

  • Kevin Powell, running against incumbent Congressman Ed Towns in District 10:  72%.
  • Luke Henry, running against incumbent State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, and Paul Newell in District 64:  67%.

DFNYC also held an endorsement vote in the State Senate race in District 25, but neither Senator Martin Connor nor Daniel Squadron achieved the 60% necessary for the DFNYC endorsement.
