PETITIONAs citizens of the United States, we stand firmly against the exploitation of student borrowers and the government subsidization of corporate bonuses that educational lenders have enjoyed for too long. We are strongly in favor of the Student Debt Relief Act of 2007 (S. 359). We support the bill's Fair Payment Assurance provision which offers student borrowers just and necessary protection against abusive lending practices. We support student loan interest rate reductions which are necessary to help prevent predatory lending and we support Pell Grant increases which are an important step toward increasing low-income access to higher education. While higher education is vital to the growth and prosperity of our country, the cost of college and graduate school continues to increase exponentially, forcing more and more students to take on enormous debt burdens. We urge you to support these provisions and vote to pass the Student Debt Relief Act of 2007. Your address will be used only for the purposes of maintaining the validity of the petition; as members of Congress are more persuaded to take action if they hear from people who live in their state or district. You may receive future communication from DFNYC regarding the status of the Student Debt Relief Act of 2007.
