Update 11/2/2007 5:30PM:
Schumer caves...
Judge Mukasey is not my ideal choice. However, Judge Mukasey,
whose integrity and independence is respected even by those who
oppose him, is far better than anyone could expect from this
administration.
Perhaps letters of disapproval are in order. Something to
keep in mind for 2010.
Michael Mukasey, George W. Bush's nominee for Attorney General, won't say
whether waterboarding is torture. This relates to the even larger concern that,
as Attorney General, Mukasey would allow the executive branch to continue to operate
as if it is "above the law". The Senate Judiciary committee will vote
on his nomination this coming Tuesday, November 6. If all 10 Democrats on
the committee vote no he will almost certainly not be confirmed, but if even
one Democrat votes yes his nomination will go to the entire Senate.
Our senior senator, Chuck Schumer, is on the committee -- and has not said
which way he'll vote.
Call Senator Schumer's office to *tell him to vote "no" on Mukasey*. His
office numbers are:
In Washington: 202-224-6542
In NYC: 212-486-4430
If you can't get though on the phone, please send an email at his
senate web site
