DFNYC Supports Stella D'oro Workers

DFNYC joined Stella D'oro workers and supporters at the rally at the Stella D'oro plant on Saturday, August 15, 2009, to celebrate their accomplishments and show support for the battle ahead.

In two weeks, the workers at Stella D'oro will mark one year since they walked off the job against unfair concenssions and launched what has become an iconic struggle for the labor movement in New York City and beyond.

Their message is simple: "Keep Stella D'oro in the Bronx.  No layoffs, no concessions, no closure!"

In July, after almost 11 months on the picket line, the workers at Stella D'oro won their strike against Brynwood Partners which had bought the Stella D'oro Biscuit Co. in 2006 and subsequently attempted to destroy the union by slashing wages, pensions, holidays, and sick pay.

But, on the same day the workers returned to their jobs, Brynwood Partners announced its intention to shutter the factory in 90 days.  Now, the workers are fighting to keep their plant open—and to preserve good union jobs in their community.

It is anticipated that Brynwood Partners will try to shut down the factory by early October, if not sooner.

The workers are asking that we show our support at the Labor Day March on Saturday, September 12th, 10:00 am, 45th Street and Madison Avenue.  Look for the Stella D'oro contingent at the front of the march.
