Tony Avella (D)
2009 NYC Mayoral Candidate
Below is a statement from Tony Avella to Democracy for NYC members
I’m running for Mayor because the people of New York deserve better than what they’ve had for the past eight years. They deserve an accessible and responsive Mayor, and that’s exactly what I’ll be.
I got my start in politics as a community activist. As a lifelong resident of Queens, I know what it’s like to be a working New Yorker and I know what it’s like to live in a community where residents are being pushed aside and priced out. Since being elected to the City Council eight years ago, I’ve worked to send a clear message – our neighborhoods are not for sale.
And that’s why my campaign stands out – it’s not for sale either. This campaign is not about huge donations from big business, or endorsements from the largest unions. This campaign is about you. It’s been powered by my constituents who want real change. It’s been driven by volunteers who love their communities and see areas that can be improved.
Once I’m elected, that isn’t going to stop. An Avella Administration will empower the people of New York City to make the changes their neighborhoods actually need. No one knows a community better than the people who live there. New buildings, rezoning plans, changes to our school system – these should not be top-down decisions made by special interest groups or officials who may never have set foot in your neighborhood. These are decisions that should be made after residents, community boards, and small business owners weigh in, too.
The people of New York City want real change, real input, and a progressive Mayor. And that’s what I’ll bring to City Hall.
I’d like to thank the hosts and attendees of the recent mayoral forum for giving me the opportunity to share my ideas. I look forward to hearing from you all in the future.
