On Sunday, May 16, Justin Krebs hosted an event for members of various progressives groups at The Tank, a performing arts space on West 42nd Street. About 100 people were in attendance.

Tom Suozzi, the 41 year-old Nassau County Executive, spoke about his organization, Fix Albany. I talked with Suozzi and some of his staff about the DFA 2.0 grassroots groups. I told them I would provide people with information about "Fix Albany", so that we can become informed about the issue. Fix Albany's website is www.fixalbany.com. Democracy for NYC is not formally endorsing Fix Albany, but we people to be informed about issues and movements in New York state government. Read below for more details.

At The Tank, Tom Suozzi spoke about the responsibilities and challenges of his position as Nassau County executive, touching on issues that affect many communities, such as property taxes, government payroll, and the need to protect important social service programs.

Suozzi also spoke about the relationship between state and local government in New York. Suozzi's new organization, Fix Albany seeks to reform New York state government. Here is the basic argument of Fix Albany, from the Fix Albany website:

"New York state's elected officials in Albany are engaged in unfair legislative practices that directly and adversely affect local taxpayers. Our local taxes (primarily property taxes) are 72% above the national average because our representatives in Albany have forced the costs of huge expenditures, like Medicaid, onto county governments. In most other states, these programs are far less expensive because they are handled more efficiently at the state level, with state money."

You can find more details at the Fix Albany Website and you can sign up for their email list. Yes, it's more stuff in your inbox, but it is important to keep informed on the workings (and non-workings) of New York state government.

Democracy for NYC is not officially endorsing the Fix Albany agenda or any candidate. The purpose of posting information about organizations on the Democracy for NYC website is to inform people about issues and movements in Democratic politics in New York so that people can make informed choices.
