Healthcare Education Project

Democracy for NYC has endorsed the Healthcare Education Project, a joint initiative of GNYHA (Great New York Hospital Association) and 1199 SEIU (Service Employees International Union). They have launched a statewide advertising and grassroots advocacy campaign to mobilize New Yorkers across the State to fight Governor Pataki's proposed healthcare cuts, including draconian cuts to the Family Health Plus and Medicaid program. The nearly $3 billion in cuts and taxes would devastate New York's already financially fragile hospitals and nursing homes, and reduce access to care for New York's children, seniors, and families. Dozens of essential hospitals and nursing homes throughout the State would be forced to close, reduce services or cut back on essential staff.

The health care industry is already under serious financial strain from years of cutbacks in federal funding, the growing uninsured population, and the increased cost of prescription drugs. The proposed cuts would be devastating to our already fragile hospitals and nursing homes as well as those who rely on state sponsored insurance programs. Vital programs like Family Health Plus will be drastically cut. Emergency rooms across the state will be shut down. Hospitals will be unable to afford cutting edge equipment that could save patients' lives. And there will be fewer beds for seniors in New York's nursing homes.

We need our respective voices heard in unison as we oppose these devastating cuts and fight for fiscal relief for counties. We are encouraging New Yorkers to reject these cuts and has offered an alternative approach that would offer real reform of the Medicaid system while providing fiscal relief for New York counties.
