We develop innovative ways to advocate for the issues that matter to our members and support legislation which has a positive effect in our communities.  We promote transparency and ethical practices in government.  We engage people in the political process and give them the tools to organize, communicate, mobilize, and enact change on the local, state, and national level.

About Democracy for New York City

Support Paul Newell for Assembly

The Board of Directors of DFNYC (Democracy for New York City) wishes to announce that we enthusiastically support our friend Paul Newell in the upcoming election for Assembly in the 65th District.  Paul is a tireless progressive advocate, with whom we have worked for many years, and he has consistently shared our belief in the need to reform the state legislature.  We think he will be an outstanding Assemblyman and a great voice for the Lower Manhattan community.  Paul Newell is exactly the kind of person that we need to be sending to Albany.

Please click on the link below for ways that you can help support Paul in the upcoming Sept. 13th primary.

Paul Newell

(Note: This statement represents only the unanimous support of our leadership  DFNYC has decided not to hold any formal member endorsement votes during this cycle)

The Orlando Shootings

Democracy for NYC stands with the victims of the mass shooting in Orlando this past weekend, and their families, friends and community. We've watched, feeling powerless, as the horrifying details of the tragedy have emerged and we need to stand up and stop these senseless killings.  We stand ready to support the LGBT community, the Latino community, and all victims of violence as we work towards healing and preventing these atrocities. We joined our fellow New Yorkers in a vigil on Sunday night, reported here by Gothamist, with photos.

DFNYC applauds ban on hydrofracking in New York

Democracy for New York City (DFNYC) applauds Governor Cuomo for approving a ban on hydrofracking in New York State.  It has been clear for some time that this method of natural gas extraction poses significant health and environmental risks and should be banned.  DFNYC is proud to have been a member of the New Yorkers Against Fracking (NYAF) coalition, and we will continue to speak out on what is one of the great environmental issues of our time.
Today's decision is a historic moment for our state and we applaud the leaders of NYAF, Sane Energy, United for Action and other groups who worked so hard to make this happen.
Thank you governor for doing the right thing

DFNYC statement on Eric Garner case

We at Democracy for New York City (DFNYC) are shocked and appalled by the decision of the grand jury in Staten Island to not indict the police offer who choked out Eric Garner.  This incident was captured on video and witnessed by many people.   Eric Garner's wife and children were entitled to see the police officer in this case answer for his actions in a fair trial.  This is another case where racial and class biases have hindered, if not prevented, a chance for citizens to have justice under the law.   We call for this matter to be taken up in federal court.  DFNYC will continue to work with progressive groups and community leaders in our city to ensure that the day will come when people, regardless of race or class, can live their lives without fear. We call on the Mayor, City Council, Police Commissioner and our elected representatives to enact much needed reforms.
