Temporary Voting Rules for 2012 Races

We have enacted new temporary rules for voting in DFNYC's endorsements in 2012 races.

We developed these rules to have a voting process that is efficient, reduces burden on our members and is fair to candidates.  For 2013 and beyond, we will develop more formal rules.

Rules:

1. For your vote to be counted, you need to be in our database (receiving the DFNYC email newsletter directly) as of July 11, 2012, last Wednesday.  It is okay if you were registered under a different email or at a different address, but you need to have been in the database before voting opened last week. We have this rule to discourage vote packing by people that were not already connected with DFNYC.

2.  Voting opened on July 12 and will be open until this Thursday, July 19. If you are sending in a paper ballot, it must be postmarked by Thursday and received by Saturday.

3. You must provide the contact information requested in the online voting, for verification purposes.  (Don't worry; we're not going to flood your mailbox with donation requests. We don't do snail mail; we have snail mail addresses to know what districts our members are in and to be in compliance with the FEC on contributions.)

Process:

4. Secret balloting:  We are very lucky to have two volunteer "vote counters" - esteemed leaders of a DFA group in another state.  They are great people who can be trusted to handle this process, and far enough away that they don't care who anyone voted for. The leadership of Democracy for NYC will not have information about who voted for which candidate.  The DFA leaders acting as election volunteers will only provide us with voter contact info so that we can verify that you are eligible to vote.

5. Election results will be tabulated by more than one person to ensure accuracy.

Fracking(4) New Yorkers Against Fracking Rally - Tomorrow (Tues.) at City Hall

From the group New Yorkers Against Fracking:

On Tuesday, July 10th at noon, New Yorkers Against Fracking will gather on the steps of New York City Hall to denounce the collusion that has apparently taken place between the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the Oil & Gas Industry on fracking regulations and call on Gov. Andrew Cuomo to withdraw draft rules. The fact that DEC officials secretly communicated exclusively with the oil and gas industry while writing hydrofracking regulations represents grave ethical impropriety by the Cuomo administration that calls into question the integrity of the governor's fracking review process and any hypothetical regulations proposed. Given these revelations about collusion between the gas industry and the DEC, the public can have no faith and trust in the DEC's current review of fracking. At the press conference, we will call on Gov. Cuomo to immediately withdraw the DEC's draft Supplemental Generic Environmental Impact Statement (SGEIS) and instruct the DEC to initiate an entirely new environmental, public health, and economic review of fracking based on science, not politics or industry influence. To restore the public's trust, transparency and independent scientists must be at the heart of any new studies and reviews. Join DFNYC on the steps of City Hall and stand up against this apparent collusion and   impropriety. For more information, please click here. As always, if you can't make it in person, you can always call the governor's office at 1-866-584-6799 and tell him you are against fracking.

SickDays(5) Rally at City Hall to Support Paid Sick Days, Wed. July 18

On Wednesday, July 18th at noon, the Women's Task Force for Paid Sick Days will rally on the steps of City Hall calling for a vote of the City Council on this important issue. This is an issue that deeply affects families when a parent loses pay or their job due to illness, leaves our workplaces vulnerable to the spread of infection, and threatens our communities due to unsustainable employment opportunities. As of this writing, 37 City Councilmembers have signed on in support of the bill. Our job, as we gather, is to urge City Council Speaker Christine Quinn to bring this bill to a vote. There is support to pass this bill and potentially even enough votes to override a possible mayoral veto, but first the City Council must vote. Please share your lunch hour with the Women's Task Force for Paid Sick Days and DFNYC and stand up for the 1.5 million New Yorkers without paid sick days. We will stand together. Ask your friends and colleagues to join us. For more information or to RSVP, please contact DFNYC Vice President Jen Berkley at This email address is being protected from spambots. LivingWage(7) City Council Overrides Bloomberg's Living Wage Veto

In a significant win for hard-working New York taxpayers, the NYC Council voted overwhelmingly on June 29th to override Mayor Michael Bloomberg's veto of the Fair Wages for New Yorkers Act. The long-overdue legislation affirms what a majority of New Yorkers believe: when tax dollars are used to promote private enterprise, the public has the right to expect something in return: good jobs at good wages. Under the terms of the legislation, any private development project directly accepting $1 million or more in taxpayer subsidies must now pay employees a living wage of $10/hour with supplemental health benefits or $11.50/hour without benefits. The Fair Wages for New Yorkers Act, co-sponsored by Council members Oliver Koppel and Annabel Palma, reforms the city's taxpayer-funded economic development programs, which have failed to create good jobs for New Yorkers because, until now, they lacked enforceable wage standards of any kind. "It's been a long journey to get here, but with the help of all of our partners, I believe we have succeeded in producing landmark legislation that will immediately help to improve the lives of hundreds of working New Yorkers," said Council Member Annabel Palma, co-sponsor of the bill, in the Daily News. Victory for President Obama on Student Loans

On Friday, July 6th, David Plouffe, Senior Advisor to the President, sent out this email to Obama supporters:

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Good afternoon --

It's July, and because Congress finally took action, 7.4 million students no longer have to worry about the interest rates on their Stafford loans doubling.

That's great news, but it was far from certain. Just a few weeks ago, it wasn't clear that it would happen.

We got this done because of you.

Americans like you spoke up on this issue. You took to Twitter and Facebook. You sent emails and talked to your friends and neighbors. And in the end, your voices made all the difference.

Last week, we sat down with a group of students who were watching this fight closely -- because the choice that Congress made would have an impact on each of them. They talked about what this legislation means, and why it was so important to speak out on this issue.

What they had to say was a powerful reminder of how everyday Americans can make their voices resonate in Washington -- and it's the kind of thing that can get you fired up for the fights ahead.

[Click here to view the video]

Last year, when you spoke out on extending the payroll tax cut, you changed the debate. We saw the exact same thing last week with the fight for student loans.

These were both huge victories for the American middle class that couldn't have happened without you.

And it's exactly the kind of effort we'll need in the weeks and months ahead.

We're working to make it easier for responsible homeowners to refinance their mortgages. We're pushing Congress to take action to create jobs and get our economy back on track. We're working to reward businesses that create jobs here in America instead of the companies that ship jobs overseas.

And we need your voices in every single one of those fights.

We'll be in touch with more ways you can stand with President Obama to move our country forward. But for now, check out this video to remind yourself of the power you have:

Thank you,

David

Senior Advisor to the President

P.S. -- If you're a homeowner struggling to refinance your home, we want to hear from you. Learn about the President's plan to help responsible homeowners refinance and share your story:

ConEdison Locks Out Unionized Workers

Update:
To read more about the contract dispute , including the defined benefit pension plan and workers contributions to healthcare, click here for the July 15th NY Times article by Patrick McGeehan.

In our DFNYC email newsletter of Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012, we included the report below on ConEd's lock out of unionized employees.  Talks are scheduled to resume on Tuesday, July 10th. For more, see this Reuters report.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

This past Sunday morning, July 1st, Consolidated Edison ("ConEd") locked out more than 8000 unionized workers, more than two-thirds of its 13,000 workforce. This was not a strike; it was a lockout by the company in the middle of labor negotiations with Local 1-2 of the Utility Workers of America.

While the union membership had authorized its leaders to call a strike at 12:01am on Sunday, union leadership continued to negotiate and says ConEd ended talks at about 1:30am. The company locked out the workers Sunday morning. ConEd claims that they are offering to extend the current contract for two weeks to continue negotiations, but a union official pointed out that this "offer" by ConEd includes an agreement not to strike, which would mean the union would have to give up the basic negotiating tool of organized labor.

Federal mediators are now involved and have arranged a meeting between union leadership and ConEd on Thursday.  News reports indicate that the main issues are pensions, wages and health care, specifically a defined benefit pension plan.

DFNYC Cheers the Supreme Court for Preserving the Affordable Care Act

Democracy for New York City applauds the Supreme Court today for upholding the Affordable Care Act. This is a great day for our country and a historic first step in our country's commitment to taking care of all its citizens. The court has affirmed that health care is a right for all Americans, not a privilege afforded to only the wealthy.

We must move forward to build on this moment and celebrate the preservation of President Obama's Affordable Care Act. We know that this will be a historic moment in our nation's history, much like the passage of the Civil Rights Act back in 1964.

We at DFNYC pledge to continue to push for health care reform on both the local and national levels, and to work for the most important moment yet to come in this fight, the re-election of President Obama in November.

Please join us at 5:30pm today, Thurs June 28th, 2012, for a celebratory rally and press conference  in Manhattan's Foley Square. Special guest and women's health advocate, Sandra Fluke, will be speaking at the rally.

See you at Foley Square!
