Rally for Marriage Equality - Sunday at 1pm

Sunday, March 24, 2013, 01:00pm
by

From the event organizers' press release:

On Sunday, March 24, marriage equality supporters will march from the historic Stonewall Inn to Washington Square Park to express support and solidarity with those who fight for marriage equality across the country, and especially before the Supreme Court. At Washington Square Park, supporters will rally for freedom for everyone—including our gay and lesbian family members, friends, co-workers, and neighbors. The rally will feature flag dancers, singers, and speeches.

Where & When: Sunday, March 24

The march commences at the Stonewall Inn (53 Christopher Street at 7th Avenue) at 1:00 PM

Rally in Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village at 2:00 PM

Who

  • US Representative Jerrold Nadler
  • Titus Burgess – 30 Rock, Broadway and singing
  • NY State Assembly member Danny O'Donnell
  • Plus several others

Why: On March 26 and 27, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on two cases related to the right to marry. These two cases – which concern the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California’s Proposition 8 – are fundamentally about whether gay and lesbian Americans can enjoy the same freedoms and opportunities as everyone else.

The so-called federal "Defense of Marriage Act" (DOMA) unfairly denies federal protections—like Social Security, veterans’ benefits, health insurance and retirement savings—to committed same-sex couples who are legally married in their own states. Proposition 8 was found unconstitutional by the Federal District Court and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals because it violates our nation’s fundamental concepts of liberty and equal treatment under the law.

A bipartisan majority of Americans support marriage equality – 75 percent of voters say the freedom to marry the person you love is a Constitutional right entitled to all Americans. Loving, committed, same-sex couples want to marry for the same reasons as straight couples: to share their hopes and dreams, be there for one another in good times and bad, and find that special someone to grow old with.
