About Democracy for NYC

Democracy for NYC (DFNYC) is committed to the ideals espoused by Democracy for America, the organization founded by Howard Dean, and the national network of local coalition groups dedicated to the same.

EndorsedLogo PlasticWe work both locally and nationally to ensure that fiscally responsible and socially progressive candidates are elected at all levels of government. We develop innovative ways to advocate for the issues that matter to our members and support legislation which has a positive effect in our communities.  We promote transparency and ethical practices in government.  We engage people in the political process and give them the tools to organize, communicate, mobilize, and enact change on the local, state, and national level.

Note: We understand that many people cannot attend tonight due to Rosh Hashana. We'll have a full report on our website, and we welcome everyone's input, even if they cannot attend Linkup.

Join us for a special Linkup Wednesday night where we will discuss the latest N.Y.P.D. controversy - labeling entire mosques as "terrorist enterprises" - in order to do surveillance of imams and members, even with no evidence of wrong doing.  We'll look at what's happening with this issue, as well as stop-and-frisk, and most importantly, talk about what we can do about it.  When the police department engages in an assault on civil liberties, we can often feel helpless to respond. Join us at Linkup where we will discuss strategies for individuals and grassroots groups to change policy policy.

Shana Tovah to all who celebrate!

This month, Linkup lands on the first night of Rosh Hashana. We understand this means many DFNYC members are celebrating and can't participate. We will have a full report on Linkup in the next newsletter and welcome your input on this issue - info-at-dfnyc.org.  (Linkups have been the first Wednesday of every month for over 10 years, since they started during Howard Dean's campaign; but we do try to avoid major religious holidays when scheduling other political events.)

Background:

Since Howard Dean's 2004 Presidential campaign, DFNYC, in conjunction with DFA, has done monthly linkups/meetups on the first Wednesday of each month.  This is a great way to meet members of DFNYC and other great progressives from around the city.

Location : Peculier Pub, 145 Bleecker Street, between Thompson & Laguardia
